Prodigy Services was in the vanguard of commercial internet content providers. It hosted some of the earliest online communities and with its “Bulletin Boards” helped forge the path for today’s social networking sites and blogs. Faced with a controversy over anti-Semitic postings on its site, Prodigy engaged Beth Tuttle to help it craft a policy and message in keeping with the values of freedom of expression and civil discourse. With her guidance, top executives and staff worked to better understand the sociology of online communities, the ethics of journalism and the fundamental principles of free speech and put them to work in member communications and public statements. The Wall Street Journal ultimately editorialized in favor of Prodigy’s response and cited their role as a responsible corporate citizen.
