The Contemporary Museum is a small organization with ambitious goals: to be the region’s leading voice for artistic and curatorial innovation and to play an instrumental role in establishing Baltimore as a vital center for contemporary art. In 2009, the Contemporary engaged METStrategies to guide its board through a strategic re-envisioning of the museum.

The museum tackled questions such as whether having a permanent gallery space as a home was necessary or whether it had in fact constrained the contemporary’s exhibition program. It explored opportunities for community partnership and honed its educational focus. What emerged is a bold but achievable plan in which the Contemporary is valued locally as an engaged, vital, and unique part of Baltimore’s cultural life, and is recognized nationally as a distinctive venue for artistic experimentation and community engagement.
