Science Education and Entertainment Summit
Our nation faces a critical challenge in science, technology, engineering and math education: how to develop 21st century teaching approaches that will be relevant and engaging for 21st century learners. On February 4, 2011, the National Academies of Science held the Summit on Science, Entertainment, and Education at the Paley Center in Beverly Hills, California. Funded by a generous grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the event gathered together more than 150 leaders to foster collaboration in the quest to transform America’s educational system in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

METStrategies was engaged to help design the day of provocative talks, workshop sessions and post-summit engagement strategies, to incite, channel and capture high levels of creative thinking. Using graphic facilitation and experiential learning techniques, we turned a group of disparate professionals with no prior relationships into an enthusiastic and collaborating community using their varied talents to improve US STEM teaching.

But the Summit was just the beginning. Having planted the seeds for innovative partnerships among scientists, entertainers, and educators, the Moore Foundation announced a $225,000 grant initiative designed to support the development of promising ideas emerging from the Summit that leverage the strengths of the entertainment media to science education.
